Sports Injury Treatment in Dallas
January 27, 2017
Whether you are a weekend warrior or a daily workout fanatic, a sports injury can send you to the sidelines. Regardless of how you managed to hurt yourself, healing will take time. Fortunately, there are steps you can take on your own that will be helpful. However, if the pain continues beyond a reasonable time, then you should seek help from a professional. Dr. Zinovy Chukhman and his staff provide sports injury treatment in Dallas that relieves pain or discomfort and promotes overall well being.
Home Treatment for a Sports Injury
Immediately after an injury happens, you can expect some pain, swelling and possibly bruising. The area may sensitive to touch and you may not be able to move it comfortably.
To treat a sports injury on your own, remember the acronym R.I.C.E.
Rest. Immediately after an injury, you can help the healing process by resting. If you’ve injured a muscle, try not to move it for the first few hours. The muscle is more vulnerable to further injury now, so rest is important.
Ice. Ice or a cold compress are best used the day of and the day after an injury. An ice pack, a bag of ice or even a bag of frozen vegetables will work to relieve the pain and swelling. Be sure to wrap the ice in a towel or cloth and apply in 20-minute intervals.
Compress. To minimize swelling and prevent fluid buildup, wrap an elastic bandage around the injury. This will also help to keep you from moving the injured area. Don’t wrap the bandage too tightly. If you do begin to feel numbness or a tingling sensation, then rewrap the bandage more loosely. All that’s needed is gentle compression.
Elevate. Keeping the injured area above the level of your heart will help minimize swelling by draining fluid away from the injury. If necessary, use one or two pillows. If you can’t elevate the area above your heart, then try to keep the injury at the same level as your heart.
